Chianti Classico Canada Press Release 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chianti Classico Wine Consortium Celebrates the 300th Anniversary of their Territory in Toronto & Montreal, Canada

Miami, FL – May 20, 2016 – Chianti Classico celebrates 300 years of history since boundaries were established to define well-suited areas to the production of fine quality wines in 1716, creating one of the world’s first wine territory. Returning to Canada with their esteemed Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, at the summit of the Black Rooster’s denomination’s quality pyramid, along with their respected Chianti Classico Riserva and the Chianti Classico Annata, a series of tastings featuring over 25 premier wineries from the region will be held in Toronto from May 29 - 30 and on June 1 in Montreal at the historic Marché Bonsecours.

The tour will kick off with a sold out winemaker dinner at the Chef’s House at George Brown College (215 King St E) on May 29 where a live tutored tasting will take place alongside an expertly paired four-course dinner prepared by the Chef’s House team featuring the premium wines of the Chianti Classico region. On May 30, the lavish Four Seasons Hotel Toronto (60 Yorkville Avenue) will host a “Chianti Classico Gran Selezione” seminar and guided tasting at 1.00 pm open to trade and media starring Chianti Classico’s prestigious denomination led by Mr. Michael Godel, Wine Critic at Winealign.com, followed by an afternoon trade walk around tasting from 2.00 pm – 5.00 pm. The same program will be offered at one of Canada's finest heritage buildings, Marché Bonsecours (360 rue St. Paul Est) in Montreal on June 1. Mr. Jacques Orhon, Master Sommelier and Founder of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers, will present the “Chianti Classico Gran Selezione” seminar and guided tasting at 11.00 am prior to an afternoon trade walk around tasting where in addition to the spectacular wines, guests will delight in Italian cheeses and delicacies from 1.30 pm – 5.00 pm. Wine lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy the tasting at an evening charity event from 6.00 pm – 9.00 pm.

There are many opportunities for Chianti Classico wineries interested in selling into the Canadian market – comments Sergio Zingarelli, President of the Consortium – Wine is growing in popularity as the beverage of choice. Not only are the consumer tastes more refined, Canadians are more willing than ever to pay more for a quality wine. I foresee a great success for our Gran Selezione.

Wineries showcased at the tastings are: Barone Ricasoli, Bibbiano, Borgo Scopeto, Candialle, Carobbio, Carpineto, Castello d'Albola, Castello di Fonterutoli, Castello di Gabbiano, Castello La Leccia, Castello Vicchiomaggio, Castelvecchi, Felsina, Fontodi, Gruppo Italiano Vini - Cantine Melini, Il Molino di Grace, La Sala, Lanciola, Le Miccine, Lornano, Losi Querciavalle, Luiano, Poggio Bonelli, Rocca delle Macìe, Ruffino, Tenuta di Arceno, Tenuta Villa Trasqua, and Villa Calcinaia.

The Chianti Clasico Wine Consortium was founded in 1924 to provide the regulation of and promotion for the Chianti Classico D.O.C.G., the historical winemaking region comprised of 172,900 acres in the heart of Tuscany.  Its boundaries were formally defined in 1932, the word “Classico” (translated to “the first” or “the original”) was attributed to the appellation created in the territory where Chianti wine was originally produced and the only one which nowadays can geographically bear this name (e.g. Greve, Castellina and Radda “in Chianti”). With 560 members, of whom approximately 365 are bottlers, the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium now represents 96% of the entire denomination and has up-to-date, well-structured and professional organization in charge of the mission for which it was created: protecting and valorizing Chianti Classico wine and its trademark.
